My Broken Language
A PLAY BASED ON HER MEMOIR

The celebrated memoir - about the bodies & spirits of the Perez women - bursts onto a stage full of Afro-Caribbean ceremony, vulgar art jokes, and dog-eared overdue library books. The theatrical adaptation of My Broken Language premiered at Signature Theater in 2022, in a production directed by the author.

“The electric, often moving idea behind the play: that the arts we attend to—literary, religious, choreographic, conversational—are what, in the end, make us who we are and set us on our way… The Author is obviously Hudes, but what makes this an original play and not a regurgitated version of her memoir is the implication, realized in these bodies, that an autobiography is common property, not a house behind a fence. Others’ real lives, their true personalities—call them spirits—shiver through us, leaving their mark.” -Vinson Cunningham, The New Yorker
